What is an Interlock® aluminum roof?
An Interlock® roof is made of interlocking aluminum panels, each locked to its neighbors on all four sides with the fasteners concealed under the panel above. Nothing is screwed through the weather surface. The panels are stamped to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile.
The panels are made in North America by the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing. Metal Roofing Texas supplies the roof in Texas, certifies independent roofing contractors on the system and assigns one to your project. It does not install roofs. The installer is an independent Texas roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your city where one is required.
Offered in Texas: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile.
Why aluminum, for a Texas roof?
Because Texas weather goes after a roof with hail, sun and wind, and on the coast with salt, and aluminum is built for all four.
Hail
Texas had 902 major hail events (hail 1 inch or larger) in 2025, the most of any state, according to NOAA data compiled by the Insurance Information Institute. The Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products. Very large hail can leave a cosmetic mark on any metal roof; the Guardian warranty covers splitting, cracking and perforation from hailstones 1.5 inches or less.
Wind
Texas has taken 59 hurricane strikes from 1851 to 2004, 19 of them major (National Hurricane Center), and straight-line thunderstorm wind reaches every part of the state. Interlock® panels lock on all four sides with no fastener in the weather; wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.
Sun and heat
Sun is what ages a roof between storms. The Alunar® 70% PVDF finish is designed and tested to meet AAMA 2605 and carries a 30-year coating warranty. What shows on a cooling bill depends on attic insulation and ventilation too, so no one can honestly promise a percentage.
Salt air on the Gulf Coast
From Brownsville to Beaumont, salt air attacks steel wherever its coating is cut or scratched. Aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation and has no steel inside to rust (ASM International).
Which profiles, and what paperwork does the building department see?
Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, in the manufacturer's Alunar® color range. The aluminum panels weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed, depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790), a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope.
In Texas, where your city issues permits, its building department checks the manufacturer's code evaluation: ICC-ES ESR-1790 evaluates the Interlock® shingle, slate, shake and tile panels under the International Building and Residential Codes. In the 14 first-tier coastal counties and part of Harris County, TWIA windstorm coverage requires a certificate of compliance (WPI-8) from the Texas Department of Insurance's windstorm inspection program for roof work done since January 1, 1988, so the installer confirms what applies at your address before anything is signed.
What's covered, in writing?
- Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing: material and finish, for the original homeowner while they own the home, transferable once (the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion). Workmanship is excluded, and ice damming is a stated exclusion.
- 30-year Alunar® coating warranty on the finish.
- Wind resistance warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification.
- Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly (ASTM E108, over GAF VersaShield® underlayment per ICC-ES ESR-2053).
- Workmanship: covered by the assigned installer's own written terms. There is no separate Interlock workmanship warranty, so read the installer's terms before you sign.
How does a roof get done through Metal Roofing Texas?
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Tell us about your roof | A minute online or one call to the toll-free line: the age of the roof, the current covering, the last hail claim, and what is prompting the change. |
| 2. A certified installer is assigned | An independent Texas roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on this system, is assigned to your project. The installer visits, measures and looks at the deck and the attic, because the fastening, and what TWIA requires in a coastal county, depend on what is actually there. |
| 3. The installer's written proposal | The price, the profile and color, the deck and ventilation work and the schedule, in a written contract with the installer's business name and certificate of insurance. The contract is between you and the installer. |
| 4. The installer does the work | The installer pulls the permit with your city where one is required and installs the roof to the manufacturer's specification. Workmanship terms come from the installer. |
| 5. The Guardian warranty | Once the installation contract is paid in full, the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, covers the material and finish for you, and transfers once when you sell. |
The installer's proposal, contract, permit and price are the installer's own. Metal Roofing Texas supplies the roof; the material warranty is issued by Interlock Roofing.
Questions, answered
Who installs aluminum roofing in Texas?
The installer is an independent Texas roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your city where one is required. Metal Roofing Texas supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.
Is aluminum roofing a good choice in Texas?
For a house you plan to keep, yes. The Interlock® Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products, aluminum cannot rust in Gulf air, and interlocked panels leave no tab for wind to lift. Very large hail can still leave a cosmetic mark on any metal roof, and any insurance credit for an impact rating is your carrier's decision.
Is the roof approved for Texas wind?
Texas has no state product approval for roofing; where your city issues permits, the building department checks the ICC-ES evaluation report, and ESR-1790 covers the Interlock® shingle, slate, shake and tile panels. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. In the first-tier coastal counties, TWIA coverage also requires a TDI certificate of compliance (WPI-8), and the installer confirms it for your address.
Is an aluminum roof better than a steel roof?
Both are metal roofs, but steel depends on its zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, and aluminum has no steel to rust. Aluminum is also about a third of the density of steel. Steel roofing usually costs less up front. The steel vs aluminum guide sets out the differences.
How much does an aluminum roof cost in Texas?
It depends on the roof's area, pitch and complexity, what comes off, the profile and options such as the Class A assembly. The assigned installer measures the roof and puts a price in a written proposal; this site publishes no price, because one number would be wrong for most houses.
Can an aluminum roof go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, only after inspection: a single layer of asphalt can be roofed over where the deck is sound and local code permits. Cedar shakes, concrete or clay tile and natural slate always come off first. The assigned installer inspects the roof and your building department has the final say.
Is an aluminum roof noisy in the rain?
Installed over a solid roof deck and underlayment, as residential Interlock® roofs are, it is not the drumming of bare metal on an open-framed barn. The deck and underlayment make the difference.
How long does an aluminum roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years. That is a property of the metal, not a promise. What is in writing is the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and the 30-year Alunar® coating warranty, plus the installer's own workmanship terms.
