Metal roofing questions, answered
30 questions homeowners ask before an Interlock® roof in Texas, each answered in the first sentence.
How it works
What Metal Roofing Texas does, and what it does not.
Who is Metal Roofing Texas?
Metal Roofing Texas is how Texas homeowners get the Interlock® aluminum roofing system. It supplies the roof, made by Interlock Roofing, certifies independent roofing contractors on the system and assigns one to your project. The roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing. It does not install roofs, hold a contractor license, set prices or name installers on this site.
Does Metal Roofing Texas install my roof?
No. The certified Interlock installer assigned to your project, an independent Texas roofing contractor, measures the roof, prices the job, signs the contract with you, pulls the permit and does the work.
What happens after I request a quote?
A certified Interlock installer for your area is assigned to your project and contacts you to arrange a visit. They look at the roof and the deck and give you a written proposal: the price, the profile and color, the deck and underlayment work and the schedule. There is no obligation.
How do I get a price?
From the installer's written proposal, after they have seen your roof. Prices are not published here, because the deck, the shape of the roof, the code that applies at your address and the profile all change the number.
Where does Metal Roofing Texas work?
All of Texas, from the Gulf Coast to the Panhandle. In the fourteen first-tier coastal counties, windstorm coverage through TWIA runs under the Texas Department of Insurance's own rules, and the installer tells you what applies at your address.
Installers, contracts & permits
Who measures, prices, contracts, pulls the permit and installs.
What does "certified Interlock installer" mean?
An independent roofing contractor who has completed the manufacturer's product-installation certification for the Interlock® system. The installer carries their own insurance and, where your city requires it, city registration.
Who is my contract with?
The installer. The proposal, the contract, the price, the permit and the workmanship terms are between you and the certified Interlock installer assigned to your project.
How do I check the installer?
Texas issues no state roofing license. Ask for the installer's certificate of insurance, their registration with your city where the city requires one, and references.
Who pulls the permit?
The installer, under their own name. The permit, the inspections and any code questions at your address are the installer's responsibility.
Will you tell me which installer I will get?
The installer is assigned after you send your request. Their name, contact details and license or registration are on their proposal and contract. This site does not list installers.
Can the roof go over my existing shingles?
Sometimes. The ICC-ES report for the system, ESR-1790, covers installation over an existing roof when the building code's conditions for a recover are met, and the old flashings must be replaced. The installer checks the deck and the existing layers and tells you in the proposal whether a tear-off is needed.
Warranty
The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing, and where workmanship terms come from.
What does the Guardian warranty cover?
The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty is issued by Interlock Roofing, the manufacturer. It covers the aluminum material and its factory finish against manufacturing defects, subject to the exclusions in the document. The Alunar® coating is warranted for 30 years against chalking and fading beyond stated limits.
What does "lifetime" mean?
The life of the original purchaser, for as long as they remain the registered owner of the home. It is not the life of the house, and it is a limited warranty: the document sets out what is covered and what is excluded.
Can I transfer the warranty if I sell?
Yes, once. The next registered owner is covered to 50 years from the substantial completion date. The new owner sends proof of purchase to the manufacturer within 60 days of the sale, with a $300 transfer fee.
Does Interlock warrant the installation?
No. Metal Roofing Texas does not install roofs and does not warrant the installation. Workmanship terms come from the installer and are written into their contract; the Guardian warranty does not cover workmanship.
Does the warranty cover hail?
It covers splitting, cracking and perforation of the panels from hailstones 1.5 inches in diameter or less. Other hail damage, such as cosmetic dents, is excluded.
What does the 120 mph figure mean?
The manufacturer warrants wind resistance up to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification. It is a warranty figure, not a building-code rating; the design wind pressure for your roof comes from the code that applies at your address.
Profiles & materials
The looks offered, and what the panels are made of.
Which profiles are offered in Texas?
Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile, all in heavy-gauge aluminum.
Is standing seam offered?
No. Standing seam is outside the ICC-ES evaluation report for the system and is not offered through Metal Roofing Texas.
What is the roof made of?
Aluminum, 3105-H24 or 3003-H24 alloy to ASTM B209, with roughly 95% recycled content, finished in the Alunar® fluorocarbon (PVDF) coating system. Interlock Roofing makes the panels in North America.
Why aluminum instead of steel?
Aluminum contains no iron, so it cannot rust, and there is no galvanized layer to wear through. It is also light: the ICC-ES report lists installed weights of 0.41 to 0.59 pounds per square foot for the aluminum profiles.
Product approvals & ratings
The code evaluation, fire, impact and approval documents.
Is the system building-code evaluated?
Yes. ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790 covers the aluminum Shingle, Diamond, Shake and Hidden Fastener Tile profiles for the 2009 through 2021 International Building Code and International Residential Code. The report is hosted on the proof page.
Is it fire rated?
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: under ESR-1790 the roof is a Class A assembly when it incorporates GAF VersaShield® fire-resistant deck protection installed per ICC-ES report ESR-2053. Over a self-adhered underlayment the assembly is nonclassified.
Is it impact rated for hail?
Yes. UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact class, verified by Intertek for Delta Building Products, on the Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile profiles.
Texas hail, wind & insurance
The Texas rules and weather questions homeowners ask first.
Does Texas license roofing contractors?
No. Texas does not license roofing contractors. Ask for a certificate of insurance, the contractor's registration with your city where the city requires one, and references.
Can a roofer pay or waive my insurance deductible?
No. A contractor may not pay, waive or rebate your insurance deductible (Business & Commerce Code section 27.02). Any coverage question is between you and your carrier.
Can my HOA stop me from choosing an impact-resistant roof?
An association may not prohibit roofing designed to resist wind or hail or to save energy, if it resembles the subdivision's shingles, is more durable than them and of equal or superior quality, and matches the look of the surrounding properties (Property Code section 202.011). Read your community's rules and apply in writing.
I'm in a coastal county. Does TWIA change anything?
In the fourteen first-tier coastal counties, TWIA windstorm coverage has its own product and installation requirements. The installer confirms what applies at your address before anything is signed.
Does a light-colored roof keep a Texas house cooler?
A lighter color reflects more of the sun, and Alunar® colors are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Attic insulation and ventilation still do more for a cooling bill than the roof covering, so no savings figure can be promised without an energy audit.
