Copper roofing in Texas, without the sales pitch
Copper earns its place on a feature such as a bay, a turret or an entry. Across a whole roof, interlocking aluminum in a copper-tone finish usually makes more sense: lighter, no patina runoff onto your siding, and a lower price. Metal Roofing Texas supplies the aluminum profiles in Texas; the manufacturer's color range includes the copper-tone Copper Penny.

Brown, then green, on a timetable no one can promise.

Siding, trim, stone and some gutter metals.
The alternative
Copper-tone aluminum
Copper Penny Alunar® finish: no patina, no runoff.
Is solid copper offered in Texas?
Not through Metal Roofing Texas. Solid copper is part of the manufacturer's Interlock® range, but Metal Roofing Texas supplies the aluminum profiles in Texas: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile. If it is the copper look you want, the aluminum alternative below gives it without the patina or the runoff.
What does patina do, and when?
Copper turns from bright metal to brown and, with time, to green, and nobody can put a date on it. Patina is a weathering reaction that runs on moisture and exposure.
In Texas the timetable depends on where you are: Gulf Coast humidity and salt air generally push patina along faster than dry West Texas air, and a shaded plane changes differently from one in full sun.
If you want the aged green, only copper gives it to you, on its own timetable. If what you want is the warm metallic tone of the first year held for decades, a copper-tone finish on aluminum is the material for that job.
Does copper stain what sits below it?
It can. As copper weathers, rain carries dissolved copper salts off the roof and onto whatever is below: siding, trim, stonework, gutters and decks. The blue-green streaking under old copper work is chemistry, not neglect. Where the roof drains over a lot of visible wall, plan for it.
Copper runoff also matters to the metals downstream. Galvalume steel, for example, should not take run-off from copper, according to its producer, so gutters and flashings below a copper roof have to be chosen with that in mind.
Where does copper earn its place, and where does aluminum?
Copper is at its strongest on a defined feature: a bay window, a turret, an entry canopy, a small steep plane at the front of a house designed around it. Small area, high visibility, and a homeowner who wants the material to change.
Across a whole roof, interlocking aluminum is usually the easier case: it weighs about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed depending on profile, it cannot rust in salt air, it locks on all four sides with concealed fasteners, with wind resistance warranted to 120 mph when installed to manufacturer specification, and it carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty. The manufacturer's Alunar® range includes Copper Penny, a copper-tone finish on aluminum with no patina chemistry, so nothing washes off onto your siding.

Questions, answered
Can I get a copper roof in Texas through Metal Roofing Texas?
Metal Roofing Texas supplies the aluminum profiles in Texas (Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile), not solid copper. The manufacturer's aluminum color range includes Copper Penny, a copper-tone finish.
How much does a copper roof cost?
More than any of the aluminum profiles, and the metal is a traded commodity whose price moves. This site publishes no roof prices; the installer assigned to your project measures the roof and puts the price in a written proposal.
Is a copper roof worth it?
On a feature, such as a bay window, a turret or an entry canopy, copper earns its place. Across a whole roof it is a harder case: interlocking aluminum cannot rust, weighs very little and comes in a copper-tone finish, at a lower price.
Does copper patina differently across Texas?
Yes: patina runs on moisture and salt in the air, so a house near the Gulf generally changes faster than one in dry West Texas. Nobody can promise a schedule.
Does copper stain what sits below it?
It can. As copper weathers, rain carries dissolved copper salts onto whatever is below: siding, trim, stonework, gutters and decks. Where the roof drains over a lot of visible wall, plan for it.
What should I look at instead of copper?
Interlocking aluminum in a copper-tone Alunar® finish such as Copper Penny. It locks on all four sides with concealed fasteners, carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and a 30-year Alunar® coating warranty, and its finish has no patina chemistry, so nothing washes off onto your siding.
