Why do cedar roofs wear out in Texas?

Cedar takes on water and gives it back in the sun, and Texas runs it through that cycle all year: heat that dries and splits the wood, humidity and rain on the coast and in East Texas, and hail that cracks weathered shakes. They cup, curl and rot, and need cleaning and re-treating to last.

Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rot or rust, so there is nothing in the panel for water, sun or salt to work on.

Can you keep the cedar look?

Yes, with the Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles. Interlock's Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines; the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof. Both are aluminum, lock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and weigh about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed depending on profile (ICC-ES ESR-1790).

Shake and Cedar Shingle suit Hill Country and ranch-style houses. If you live under an HOA, Property Code § 202.011 stops an association from prohibiting wind- and hail-resistant shingles that resemble the subdivision's authorized shingles, are more durable and of equal or superior quality, and match the surrounding properties.

Does the cedar have to come off?

Yes. A cedar roof always comes off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the assigned installer puts the tear-off in the written proposal from the start, along with any deck repair the inspection finds.

How does fire risk change?

Untreated cedar shakes are commonly unrated for fire. The Interlock® roof has Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, over GAF VersaShield® underlayment per ICC-ES ESR-2053 (ASTM E108). The rating belongs to the assembly, not to the panel alone, and aluminum itself does not ignite.

Who does the work?

The installer is an independent Texas roofing contractor, certified by the manufacturer on the Interlock® system and assigned to your project, who signs the contract with you and pulls the permit with your city where one is required. Metal Roofing Texas supplies the roof but does not install it; the roof carries the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty, issued by Interlock Roofing.

Questions, answered

Is aluminum a good replacement for cedar shakes?

Yes. The Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles keep the cedar look without the rot, splitting, moss and re-treatment, at about 0.41 to 0.59 lb per square foot installed.

Will it look like real cedar?

From the street it reads as a shake or shingle roof. The certified installer assigned to your project brings samples and colors to the visit so you can judge it on your house.

Can a metal roof go over my cedar shakes?

No. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before an Interlock® roof goes on, and the tear-off is in the installer's written proposal.

Can my HOA stop me replacing cedar with metal in Texas?

It can regulate appearance, but Property Code § 202.011 stops a property owners' association from prohibiting shingles designed primarily to be wind and hail resistant, if they resemble the shingles authorized in the subdivision, are more durable and of equal or superior quality, and match the surrounding properties.
